The last practice session I did I started to experience some valve float. I decided now was the time to replace the original springs with some new ones. I found that the intake valve retainer groove and the spring retainer were damaged pretty badly. It was mushroomed out so badly that I had to grind the end of the valve down with the Dremel to remove it from the cylinder head. This is just something to look out for when you perform your routine maintenance. The pictures shows some of the damage of the valve end after I removed it:

Dont tell me that. Now I might have to work on mine. I do not do any maintenance on mine I just get in and drive. I have not done anything to mine since I first built it . I have experienced some valve float to, so that makes it worse. Now I will have to take a look at it . ;D. Thanks for the heads up, cant wait for the night race this should be fun.

So, Gene checked his valves and found the exact same problem. The intake valve had the same notching and mushrooming as mine did. The exhaust valve, not as much. His motor had only 2 practice days and 1 race day on it.
I'll break into mine later this week to see how the new intake valve fared over the last race weekend.

just looked at mine today and they are not bad. One has a little mushrooming ( the one without the cap on, whichever that one is ) but only enough that it would not take some light sandpapering to get it out, but mine have 5 races on them and I have had the good valve springs in since the beginning so maybe that has helped.

I think you're right, oldschool. I ran the original springs for 3 races and 3 practice days and I'm certain that they were the problem. Gorgeman has had the upgraded springs from the start and he's never had a problem, even though he has twice as many laps on his motor as I have.

I guess I should pop off the cover and have a look at mine. You guys are making me nervous! If I don't look they will be fine, right?
