I hear the Rotax motors are expensive to run, primarily because you have to send them off to be freshened?
Can some of you Rotax warriors give me the straight scoop on rebuild and tear down frequency on a non-shifter Rotax kart, cost and shipping to have work done? Where you have to send them. I understand tires are quickly used up, but how quick? Other than frequent oil changes, what maintenance can the owner do?
I'm trying to talk myself into a kart and learning.
Thanks

My personal opinion is that Rotax is a very competitive class but NOT for a beginner. Not cuz they have too much power but because they will piss a new karter off by the ridiculous prices that you have to pay to stay at the front of a very close pack. I would definitely go clone or wf if I were you. And from the sounds of it you might want to go clone. WF you basically get a good motor, bolt it on and go. It sounds like you like to tinker and there is a lot of tinkering involved in clone. So its all about what you want. If you want to open you check book wide open and still be frustrated then go COTAX, i mean ROTAX....If you want to hop in it and just learn to drive and do nothing but oil and gas then WF, if you want a competitive class but lots of tinkering then clone is your answer. Whatever you decide I hope you come experience Karting with us at TCKC....Its a blast and the Aug 3 night race is sure to be awesome!

Your description of the CO..., I mean ROTAX, is what I thought it might be. I thought Clone was a class you couldn't modify at all. I also think WF is that way, but then I hear of a "4-stroke" class that sounds like a totally different class. Is that just what WF is called? Is there no 4-stroke class that can be modified? From what you say I imagine you would steer me away from a shifter kart?
Thanks, I'm looking seriously and think I may have found a kart for my wife, a non-shifter kt100. I assume two stroke, is it a decent cart/class? I don't think she would race, just run practice for fun.

The kt-100 is a good solid engine, but in my opinion the clutches are high maintainence, but that depends on who you talk to. The WF is a really good starter kart even for your wife because they are pretty durable between the engine, clutch, etc. She controls the pedals, so it'll only go as fast as she wants.

Listen to VOODOO...Steer clear of the Rotax package if you're a beginner. Too much to go into here on the boards, they are definitely a good motor for when you're ready to see just how good you really are, but I wouldn't recommend starting out in one.
Clone and World Formula are your best bets for starting out. I personally wouldn't recommend a KT100 for your wife at this time, another good and fun engine but they can be tempermental.
