can i use DOT 3 for my brakes?

It depends on the system. Is it American or European? If it's European then it will use DOT 4. If it's American then you need to be careful because it may take DOT 5 and you definately do not want to mix that with anything else.
Do you know the brand of master cyl or if there are any stickers or stampings on it?
